Meet Linda

Linda Kocent, MSN-HI, RN, is the owner and lead nurse consultant of Kocent Legal Nurse Consulting. After operating a successful retail business for 20 years, She returned to college for education that would allow her to pursue her life-long mission of helping others.

Linda achieved an Associate Nursing Degree and began her healthcare career caring for post-surgical Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgical patients at University Hospitals Case Medical Center (UHCMC) in Cleveland, Ohio. The patient population included post-operative cardiac surgery patients, post-heart catheterization, electrophysiology procedures, and organ transplant patients. This was a step-down unit where all the patients were on telemetry monitors requiring close monitoring. Patients in the hospital experiencing acute medical changes, such as heart arrythmias, would be transferred to her unit for a higher level of care.

When six Medical Intensive Care step down beds were added to the unit, Linda developed nursing skills which would prepare her for the next step in her nursing career. After five years at UHCMC, Linda took a position at Southwest General Health Center, a community hospital serving the Greater Cleveland area. There she took a position in the Medical Critical Care unit where she cared for higher acuity patients including acute Myocardial Infarction (MI), Stroke (CVA), Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Within the first two weeks, Linda experienced caring for a stroke patient whose return to normal function occurred as a result of following a relatively new standard of care protocol. Linda acquired a vast education of protocols and procedures caring for patients on respiratory support such as ventilators, BIPAP, and CPAP, as well as hemodynamic support therapies and intravenous medications.

After two years in Critical Care, Linda pursued the opportunity to work in the Surgical Critical Care and Progressive Care patient units. There she expanded her expertise caring for patients before and after surgery and other procedures during their hospitalization including neurosurgery, cardiac, orthopedic, and vascular surgery, just to name a few.
While working as a bedside nurse, Linda obtained her Bachelor degree of Nursing, and later, a Master of Nursing in Health Informatics. After ten years at the bedside, Linda decided to take a full-time role as a Clinical Informaticist with Cerner (now Oracle) Corporation and stay at Southwest General Health Center to educate and support the clinical staff using the electronic health record (EHR). Supporting the end-users involved troubleshooting the EHR system, creating process improvements, and providing education on efficient use of the system and creating documentation that supports excellent patient care while meeting regulatory standards.

After 14 years of nursing and support, Linda recognizes medical protocols, standards of care, and electronic healthcare records. Nurses create the medical record, and she understands how to review records and find missing elements that can be pivotal to winning your case.
